Come In with Reeling in the Queers & Dublin Pride
On Come in we love our queer history and have had the privilege to speak to a number of iconic figures here on the show who have played an integral role in the social advances for our community. So far we’ve had Ailbhe Smyth, co-director of the ‘Together for Yes’ referendum campaign and spokesperson for the Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment.. We had Tonie Walsh, co-founder of the Gay Community News, activist and historian.
We also had Moninne Griffith who was the director of Marriage Equality and now the CEO of Belong To Youth Service who are the Grand Marshal of this year’s Dublin Pride and just last week we had Declan Buckley aka Shirley Temple Bar who since 1997, when she won Alternative Miss Ireland has hosted over a thousand weekly Bingo shows on Sundays in the queer institution that is The George and since 2001 has been presenting Telly Bingo on RTE 3 times a week firstly as Shirley Temple Bar and then as himself. Do listen back as each conversation with our queer heroes has been inspirational and deeply insightful of just how far our community has come.
This year Dublin Pride marks its 50th anniversary – just like me as I turned 50 a few months ago – This year Dublin pride promises to be the biggest and most fabulous one yet. So today we are going to take a closer look at our Irish queer history as after all queer history is Irish
history!
I have the pleasure to welcome on show Jed Dowling, (He/him) Festival Director of Dublin Pride and we are joined by Paraic Kerrigan (He/him) author of Reeling in the Queers that has just been published by New Island Books, Paraic is a also researcher and Assistant Professor in the School of Information and Communication Studies at University College Dublin.
