Deputy CMO, Dr Ronan Glynn, said there was concern over people congregating over the Xmas period.
"It is inevitable that there will be greater levels of socialisation over the coming weeks.
"It is inevitable that there will be greater levels domestic travel, potentially greater levels of international travel.
"On a background of that, we're particularly concerned that people would come together in groups, whether that's in restaurants or other settings, because that has, implicit within it, an increased risk in terms of the individuals and in terms of our ability to control this disease."
As of 2pm today, 244 are in hospital with the virus, with 31 of those in ICU.
