Ireland is a regulatory 'no man's land' for dermal fillers

Doctor's are calling for stricter regulation and control.

A group of Irish doctors are calling for regulations to be introduced to limit those who can inject dermal fillers.

Currently, only doctors and dentists can administer Botox, but dermal fillers aren't subject to the same restrictions.

Now the Irish faculty of the British College of Aesthetic Medicine (BCAM) are calling for that to change.

The group said Ireland has almost "no regulation" in aesthetic medicine, which is leading to a "no man's land" where unlicensed individuals can perform procedures without the necessary qualifications and oversight.

Dr. Sean Fitzpatrick, Director of the Natural Look Clinic, thinks people need to be aware of the consequences:

"This is your face, and if you are going to let someone put something into your face that will have lasting effects, do your research and shop around... We've noticed an exponential rise in social media advertising where you have the likes of hairdressers, nail technicians and make-up artists going to the North of England and doing courses and then run these so-called clinics."

He added: "The public are being totally duped and it's a matter of public safety now."

Dr. Jennifer Owens, owner of the Glow Clinic said: "Any injectable treatment brings with it risks, and it doesn't matter if you are very good at what you do, there's still an element of risk... The problems that can arise are infection, inflammatory reactions, stroke, blindness, areas of the face losing their blood supply."
