The latest figures from the Health Research Board show 408 children were admitted to psychiatric hospitals last year.
It's a slight dip on 2017 when the figure stood at 441; however there's been an overall rise over the last decade.
More than three quarters were admitted for the first time in 2018 and 84 were placed in adult units.
Depression accounted for a third of admissions, while there were more girls than boys looking for help, with 63 percent females.
In total there were 17,000 admissions to Irish psychiatric hospitals and units during 2018.
