There are calls for new rules to stop fake news appearing on Facebook and Twitter.
Nearly one in every two people here gets their news entirely from social media.
There were 261 complaints made to the office of Press Ombudsman last year about newspapers, mags and online only news publications.
That's down from 278 in 2015.
Nine complaints were upheld.
The chair of the Press Council, Sean Donlon, estimates half of people are taking their news entirely from social media, which isn’t regulated.
He says controls need to be brought in after a number of cases.
Most complaints last year were over accuracy.
Those that were upheld were usually to do with kids or privacy.
