Bradley Wiggins Retires

All Sport

Bradley Wiggins has today announced his retirement from professional cycling.

The 36 year-old became the first British person to win the Tour de France in 2012, and is also the most-decorated British Olympian of all time with 8 medals.

In a short statement published on his Facebook page, he said that it has been a dream come true to make a career out of something he loved doing, but said that "2016 is the end of the road for this chapter".

He also thanked the British public for their unwavering support, saying that "What will stick with me forever is the support and love from the public though thick and thin, all as a result of riding a pushbike for a living".

However, Wiggins has been under scrutiny in recent months after it emerged that he received three Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) for a steroid hormone, including one just prior to his 2012 Tour de France victory.

Wiggins claims these were to help him with a history of asthma and pollen allergies.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Wiggins' former coach Shane Sutton explained why he felt the cyclist was a legend of sport.
