Irish number one, James McGee, has booked his place in the second qualifying round for the Australian Open.

The Dubliner beat Croatian Matija Pecotic 7-6, 7-5 on Wednesday morning in Melbourne.

The 29-year-old from Castleknock is looking to go one step further than he did last year when he suffered defeat in the final qualifying round.

The Castleknock man, who's currently ranked 195th in the world, faces a tougher proposition in the second qualifying round on Friday. He'll play Frenchman, Vincent Millot, who's ranked 52 places above him.

The pair have met on two occasions, once in 2014 when Millot won and more recently in 2016 when McGee was victorious in 3 sets 3-6 6-1 6-4.
