Johnny Sexton has revealed that he was handed the Ireland captaincy for the duration of the Six Nations only.
The Leinster number 10 will lead Ireland in the matches against Italy and France later this year, provided they go ahead.
He says a conversation with Ireland head coach, Andy Farrell, prior to the tournament, saw them discuss the fact that the captaincy of the team will be up for review once Ireland finish their campaign.
Sexton revealed: "Andy Farrell had spoken to me before the Six Nations.
"We talked about it (the captaincy) being a one campaign thing. So, I’m not sure what he'll do going forward whether he’ll go with someone else or whether he thinks I’ve done a good job.
"I've enjoyed it, I'll be happy no matter what.
"If it is someone else I'll get in behind them, and if it is me I'll try to improve and help the team as best as I can."
