Open champion Cameron Smith has become the highest ranked player to join the breakaway Liv Golf series.

The world number two's been confirmed as one of six new golfers for the next event in the US.

Fellow major winners Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson are among others who've joined the Saudi-backed league - and have been banned from the PGA Tour.

Smith, who won The Open last month, has been the subject of rumours about jumping to the upstart tour for weeks has now finally been announced.

He also won The Players Championship in March.

Joining Smith will be Joaquin Niemann, Harold Varner the third, Cameron Tringale, Marc Leishman and Anirban Lahiri.

The next LIV Golf event - the fourth of eight on its schedule in 2022 - is The International in Boston next weekend.
